HISTORY OF MARCASITE JEWELRY
Jewelry with marcasite stones has been known since ancient times, but became quite popular in the 19th century, during the Victorian era in England.
They are also a target of great interest on the part of the artists of the Art Nouveau movement, who apply marcasites on silver jewelry to make the most out of the stone’s shine.
Jewels with this type of stones became very popular in Portugal from the 50s of the 20th century, using inspiration from older jewels, bringing back the use of brooches in the shape of a bow or "King earrings".
MARCASITE STONE
Marcasite is a type of dark opaque stone that has metallic reflections.
What is commonly referred to as marcasite is actually pyrite, another type of stone with a chemical composition and characteristics similar to the previous one, opaque and with golden metallic reflections, which is why it is also considered as “fools gold”, but much more resistant than true marcasite.
