    Rainha D.Leonor (2 May 1458) - Wife of King João II of Portugal and the richest princess in Europe. She gave part of her fortune to finance the creation of a Portuguese charity organization - a pioneering initiative which is the oldest working NGO in the world.

    Paula Rego (26 Jan 1935) - International painter who has received the rank of Officer of the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II due to her contribution to the arts.

    Antónia Ferreira (4 Jul 1811) - Often referred to as "Ferreirinha", she was a pioneer and an innovative businesswoman of Porto wine while maintaining a social care for her workers and their families.

     

    GEMINI (21 May - 20 Jun)
    Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (3 Jun 1908) - Portuguese painter internationally known who has also lived in Rio de Janeiro and Paris and was the first woman to receive the Grand Prix National des Arts in France.

     

    ARIES (21 Mar - 19 Apr)
    Carolina Beatriz Ângelo (6 Apr 1878) - First and only woman to vote in Portugal in 1911. Since she was a widow and had a daughter, she was able to be considered “head of the family” by the court and allowed to vote. In the following year, the law was amended specifying that only male citizens could vote.

     

    CAPRICORN (22 Dec - 19 Jan)
    Rainha Santa Isabel (4 Jan 1271) - Wife of King D. Diniz of Portugal and often acted as a peacemaker to solve disputes between the Iberian royal families. She was canonized for her charity to the poor and is recognized in Portuguese popular culture mainly due to the legend of the miracle of roses.

     

    SAGITTARIUS (22 Nov - 21 Dec)
    Florbela Espanca (8 Dec 1894) - Poetess with an unprecedented emotional female eroticism in Portuguese literature, full of intense and unstable loves.

     

    VIRGO (23 Aug - 22 Sep)
    Natália Correia (13 Sep 1923) - Poetess, as she liked to be called, with unusual public speaking talent and with great combative courage. She had an important political role in the defence of democracy and women's rights.
                                                                                     

     

    LEO (23 Jul - 22 Aug)
    Amália Rodrigues (23 Jul 1920) - Fado singer acclaimed as the voice of Portugal and our greatest diva. With more than 170 albums published in 30 countries, she introduced poems of great Portuguese poets in the Fado songs. She is buried in the National Pantheon, among other renowned Portuguese people.
                                                                                     

     

    SCORPIO (23 Oct - 21 Nov)
    Sophia De Mello Breyner Andresen (6 Nov 1919) - Portuguese poetess, was the first woman to receive the Camões Prize, the most important literary prize of the Portuguese language. She is buried in the National Pantheon, among other renowned Portuguese people.

     

    LIBRA (23 Sep - 22 Oct)
    Maria de Lurdes Braga de Sá Teixeira (19 Oct 1907) - Feminist icon who fought against all the prejudices of her time.
